East Ridge cancels council meeting

Icy roads will keep East Ridge garbage crews benched until Jan. 17, and a City Council meeting scheduled for Thursday has been canceled, officials said.

Councilmen were expected to fill a vacant council seat Thursday, and several controversial resolutions were on the meeting's agenda.

There are no plans to reschedule. The council meets twice a month.

"Right now everything just holds over to the Jan. 27 meeting," City Manager Eddie Phillips wrote in an e-mail.

He said city street and sanitation crews are still working "around the clock" to clear and sand icy streets. Fire and police units continue to operate under inclement weather response plans, Phillips said.

While garbage services will resume Monday, other city offices will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Phillips said.
