Most city roads passable, thaw on way

On the fifth day after the snowstorm, most streets in Chattanooga are passable and thawing today should help, according to a city news release.

Though some roads may refreeze overnight, temperatures in the 40s are expected over the weekend.

Mayor's office spokesman Richard Beeland said that since Sunday, work crews have spread 84,450 gallons of brine at a cost of $17,256.64 and 2842 tons of salt and sand at a cost of $184,610.40 (1:3 salt-to-sand ratio).

The crews have racked up 2,651.25 hours of overtime at a cost of $63,179.84, and the city's 3-1-1 system has responded to more than 2,900 calls (1,245 in the past 24 hours) since Sunday.

Beeland said garbage collection crews began limited collection Thursday and will continue today on roads where icy conditions pose no risk. Normal collection schedules will resume on Monday and all additional bags of garbage will be collected.

Curbside recycling collection will resume normal schedule on Jan. 24.
