Commissioners silent on District 3 support

With 11 candidates to choose from, three commissioners say they do not know which they will support Thursday to fill the vacant District 3 seat.

Chairman Larry Henry said he sees at least three viable candidates, but did not want to name them or which he was voting for. Commissioner Joe Graham also said he has not made up his mind.

"I'm still doing my homework," he said. "Since I've got the time, I'm trying to use it."

Commissioner Fred Skillern said he has also narrowed his choices down to two or three people but like Graham and Henry he isn't willing to say who.

If commissioners cannot find five votes to fill the seat vacated by Jim Coppinger, it could throw the county into another deadlock. For weeks the county deadlocked between Coppinger and former assistant to the mayor Mike Carter. Carter said commissioners planned to appoint one of the 11 - Middle Valley Church of God pastor Mitch McClure - as part of a plot to appoint Coppinger mayor.
