Chattanooga: Biker's leg severed in crash

A motorcyclist severed his left leg when he crashed into a guardrail on U.S. Highway 27 tonight, according to Chattanooga police.

Tommy Peppers, 56, was riding his Harley-Davidson south about 8 p.m. when he lost control and hit the rail, then was thrown into the oncoming lane, according to the police news release shortly after 11 p.m.

Police said Peppers was rushed into surgery at a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The highway was closed for several hours.
