Memorial honors 2 Tennessee Guardsmen killed in crash

KNOXVILLE - Two Army National Guardsmen killed in a helicopter crash were remembered in eulogies from fellow servicemen during a memorial ceremony at a church in Knoxville.

Nearly 300 people turned out for the nearly hour-long service Saturday to honor 1st Lt. Thomas J. Williams Jr. and Chief Warrant Officer Daniel E. Cole, the Knoxville News Sentinel reports.

The two were killed when their OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter crashed July 9 during a training exercise near Exit 141 off Interstate 75 in Campbell County. Military officials say it may take several weeks to fully investigate the crash.

The service including the playing of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes.

Maj. Gen. Terry "Max" Haston, the state adjutant general, said afterward that the ceremony was helpful in the healing process for the servicemen who attended.
