The six U.S. senators representing Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, all Republicans, today signed a letter opposing a debt-ceiling plan proposed by Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker of Tennessee, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson of Georgia, and Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby of Alabama were among 43 Republicans to sign the letter to Reid, a Democrat.

The letter slams Reid's proposal to raise the debt ceiling by $2.4 trillion, saying it calls for less than $1 trillion in spending cuts over the next decade.

Reid has said his bill would cut spending by $2.2 trillion over 10 years.

Both houses of Congress are at work this weekend as the clock ticks down to Tuesday, when the government's borrowing authority expires unless the debt ceiling is raised.

Earlier today, the Republican-dominated House rejected Reid's bill, 246-173.
