1 killed in Lee Highway crash

One person died today and another was injured in a five-vehicle crash on Lee Highway, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

In a news release, spokeswoman Janice Atkinson said the crash happened just before 2 p.m. when a tractor-trailer traveling south swerved right to miss a car that was stopped and waiting to turn.

The vehicle behind the big rig swerved left and hit the left rear area of the truck. The impact sent that vehicle across the center line, where it hit a northbound car head on. Then a fifth vehicle traveling south hit the rear of the one that crossed the center line.

The driver of the northbound car died and the driver who crossed the center line was injured, Atkinson said.

No names were released pending notification of next of kin.
