The number of passengers boarding flights in Chattanooga rose in May to the highest monthly level in nearly four years.

The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority announced today that 28,837 passengers departed on commercial flights from Lovell Field last month. May's passenger volume was up 16 percent from the same time a year ago.

"Airports often reflect the economic conditions of the region surrounding them," said Mike Lundguth, president of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority. "That growth, combined with extremely competitive faires, is attracting more travelers into the airport."

Airport boardings were boosted by expanded service to Detroit and new flights to Destin and Fort Walton Beach, Fla., on Vision Airlines.
