CARTA starts pay by phone parking service

CARTA today kicked off new service at four downtown lots and one garage in which motorists can use their cell phones to pay to park.

"This is a first step to becoming more convenient to do business in our city," said Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield.

Using service from Parkmobile USA, motorists can register through the company or download an app to enable them to charge their parking fee to their credit card.

Laurens Eckelboom, Parkmobile USA's executive vice president for marketing, said motorists will pay a 35-cent convenience fee per transaction.

He said more downtown parking lots are slated to come online within six to eight weeks.

The CARTA lots are at Riverfront Parkway and Power Alley, the Incline Railway, Coolidge Park and Renaissance Park. CARTA's parking garage off Frazier Avenue also is included in the pay by phone parking service, officials said.
