Missing Fayetteville couple found in Chattanooga

The elderly Fayetteville couple who were reported missing Thursday were found overnight at a Hixson motel and are back home, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office says.

Ernest, 87, and Dorothy Carroll, 86, are physically fine and were taken home by their son, Kenneth Benson, sheriff's spokeswoman Janice Atkinson said in a news release today.

According to the Lincoln County, Tenn., Sheriff's Office, the couple first traveled to Hickman County, Tenn., on Thursday. A deputy settled them in a motel room and tried to contact the son, who missed the call. On Friday, the Carrolls showed up in South Pittsburg and a truck driver helped get them a meal and a motel room. On Saturday, they were seen in Chattanooga.

Atkinson said the couple's blue Saturn was spotted outside the motel at 4833 Hixson Pike and called Benson, who contacted them and took them home.
