Senate OKs measure to ban Tennessee income tax

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A proposal that would amend the Tennessee Constitution to ban an income tax has passed the Senate 28-5.

Republican Sen. Brian Kelsey of Germantown, the measure's sponsor, said before the vote on Wednesday that the proposal is necessary to "forever close the door" on an income tax in Tennessee.

Democratic Sen. Beverly Marrero of Memphis says the legislation is unnecessary and would be "bad for business and bad for Tennessee" because it would tie the hands of future state lawmakers.

The proposal, which would go on the ballot in 2014, was amended earlier in the legislative process to require notification also be published in newspapers and not just on the Secretary of State and General Assembly websites.
