School board won't endorse Cleveland swim center

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Cleveland city school board won't be financially supporting a proposed community aquatics center.

Board members will present their budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year Monday to the Cleveland City Council without Cleveland High School volunteer swim coach Tim Davis accompanying them to advocate for the aquatics center.

They like the idea of a competition-style center where the Cleveland High School swimming team could compete, practice and host meets, board members said. But they don't want the swim center to seem as if it is competing for sorely needed school funds and a future elementary school.

"The message loud and clear from us should be our need for a new school," school board Chairwoman Peggy Pesterfield said.

Davis likely will make a presentation himself at a regular Cleveland City Council session.
