A clerk at a liquor store in Calhoun, Ga., stopped a man from robbing the store and held him down until police arrived.

Calhoun police found Eric Lee Smith, of 925 Newton Road, pinned on the floor of Party Liquor store Wednesday evening, Chief Garry Moss said in a news release.

The clerk told officers he saw Smith, 31, put two bottles of liquor inside his jacket and tried to stop him. They got into a fight and Smith tried to pull a handgun from his pants pocket, Moss said.

"We do not believe this was an armed robbery attempt, but rather a desperate attempt to escape the clerk to avoid prosecution that subsequently turned violent," Moss said.

Smith was booked in Gordon County jail and he faces charges of aggravated assault, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, shoplifting and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
