Senator Lamar Alexander

U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., today toured Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant, calling it "an engineering marvel."

The Tennessee senator also drove a black, all-new Passat around the plant campus. He called the new mid-size sedan "fun to drive.

"It's roomy," he said. "It looks good."

Alexander said that with fuel prices escalating American motorists will be drawn to the Passat, which Volkswagen maintains can get up to 43 miles per gallon with its clean diesel engine.
