Three Tennessee men were charged on March 8 with four counts of violating the federal Horse Protection Act, according to a U.S. Department of Justice media release.

Barney Davis, 38, of Lewisberg, Christen Altman, 25, of Shelbyville, and Jeffery Bradford, 33, of Lewisburg, were charged with intentionally causing pain to horses hooves to alter their gaits, or soring. This practice improves horses values in competitions.

The three appeared in U.S. District court March 8.
