Expert: Accused flesh-eater has numerous mental issues

Knoxville - Herbert Mike Merritt was likely in a psychotic state when he killed Anthony Laymon "Tony" Ford, a forensic psychologist told a Knox County Criminal Court jury today.

Ford, 45, was shot six times, slashed and stabbed by Merritt at the Friends Bar and Grill on Maynardville Highway in Halls, prosecutors allege. While holed up in the bar after the shooting, Merritt, who was 47 at the time, is alleged to have pulled out part of the victim's lung and eaten it.
