Hamilton County: Schools facilities committee meets on priorities

The Hamilton County School system's facilities committee is meeting this afternoon to determine school construction priorities. Among the items up for consideration are building a new elementary school north of Ooltewah-Georgetown Road to relieve overcrowding at Wallace A. Smith and Snow Hill Elementary; adding additional rooms to Wolftever Creek Elementary; building an addition to Snow Hill Elementary School to accommodate growth around Highway 58; and replacing Ganns Middle Valley and Falling Water elementary schools with one new elementary school.

Each of the actions would require zoning changes.

The net effect of the plan is to build six new schools, four additions and close 11 schools.

Board members now are determining what the priority will be for the first phase of the plan.
