TBI report shows drop in overall crime at colleges, but increase in violent crime

Crime at college campuses in 2010 is down from the previous year, but the number of violent crimes is up, according to an annual report released by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

There were 7,190 offenses reported on campuses in 2010 compared with 7,538 in 2009, a 4 percent drop overall.

But violent crime rose nearly 20 percent, from 102 offenses in 2009 to 122 offenses in 2010, according to TBI spokesperson Kristin Helm.

Prior to 2009, the state saw a decrease of crime on campus every year between 2004 and 2008. Helm said the 2009 increase in offenses reported was attributed by universities to a 10 percent increase of enrollment on college campuses.

The number of crimes reported on campuses are still up overall from where they were several years ago, Helm noted.
