MLB hits Braves' McDowell with fine, 2-week ban

ATLANTA - Major League Baseball has suspended Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell for two weeks without pay and fined him following allegations he made homophobic comments and crude gestures toward fans before a game in San Francisco.

The commissioner's office announced the discipline Sunday. It was retroactive to Friday, when McDowell was placed on administrative leave by the Braves. The amount of the fine was not disclosed.

McDowell issued an apology Thursday and will be required to participate in sensitivity training. He also will have to apologize directly to the fans involved in the April 23 incident, Justin Quinn and his family.

Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement Sunday that insensitivity to others "simply cannot and will not be tolerated."
