Howard Thompson, the Bradley County commissioner indicted in January on charges of filing a false report and attempted theft over $1,000, has resigned from the commission.
Thompson, who has been the Fourth District commissioner for 16 years, announced his resignation at the commission's meeting Monday.
Thompson was accused of knowingly buying stolen merchandise for the flea market he owns on U.S. Highway 64.
In a prepared statement released Monday, he said the arrest and subsequent publicity forced him to quit.
"My first response to the publicity of a few weeks ago readily acknowledged that I am a mortal human being," he said in the statement. "I have made mistakes in my life and I said I would do the right thing."
