Chattanooga: Man charged in box cutter attack

A man Chattanooga police found covered in blood from cuts to the face and head told them he was attacked by a man wielding a box cutter after the two got in an argument, according to a police arrest report.

Fernando Hughley, 52, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and disorderly conduct after Charles Green, 47, told police Hughley had slashed him with a box cutter.

A female witness told police Green and Hughley were arguing at an apartment in the 800 block of W. 13th Street and that Hughley snapped after Green touched him on the shoulder. The argument carried over to another residence in the block, where the woman said Green slipped and fell to the ground, at which point Hughley fell upon him, punching him and cutting him with the blade, according to police.

Police took Green to Parkridge Hospital. Hughley's next court date is set for May 12.

He has a prior arrest record of more than 40 charges including assault, theft and drug possession stretching back to 1989, court records state.
