Wacker Chemical Corp. could have more than 200 workers on board by the end of the year as it continues to build a $1.5 billion plant in Bradley County, an official said today.

Rolf Hirsenkorn, Wacker's vice president for polysilicon production worldwide, said it currently has received hundreds of applications for the first 70 chemical operators for the factory. Production is to start in early 2014 at the plant near Charleston, Tenn., that's to employ 650 workers.

He told the Tennessee Valley Corridor National Technology Summit that more than 1,000 people will be at the construction site when work is at its peak at the factory that will make polysilicon used in the solar industry.
