Chattanooga attracts major softball tournament

Chattanooga has beaten eight cities to land the Amateur Softball Association's 12-and-under ASA/USA national championship tournament for 2013.

The tournament will ring more than 100 teams from all over the United States to the Summit of Softball complex and Warner Park, according to a news release from Chattanooga Parks and Recreation. The Chattanooga Choo Choo will serve as host hotel. The economic impact to the city is estimated at more than $2 million.

"We are pleased that the ASA Council recognized our efforts in putting on a quality tournament this past summer," Kim Swafford, ASA softball commissioner, said in the release.

Greta Hayes, Chattanooga recreation director, praised the tournament staff's work in landing the tournament.

"I feel honored that the National Council members of ASA have awarded this prestigious tournament to Chattanooga," she said in the release.

Earlier this week, the National Softball Association awarded Chattanooga another major youth baseball tournament, bringing 90 teams to compete in the summer of 2012.
