John Bradley Wiser pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder charge today in the 2010 beating and strangulation death of his wife Shannon Wiser.

Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Rebecca Stern sentenced Wiser to 20 years as part of an agreed-upon sentence between the District Attorney' s office and Wiser's attorney Jay Clements.

Wiser was originally charged with first-degree murder following the Sept. 7, 2010 incident. He pleaded guilty to the lower charge to avoid a trial.

Under Tennessee law, a conviction of second-degree murder carries a 15- to 25-year sentence range.
