Smith Salon owner Janet Smith, left, is celebrating her grand opening in her new location with a fish bowl of discounts during the Sunday on Signal event Saturday, Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 13 from 1-6 p.m. Ashley McGann, right, will be selling products from Premier Jewelry and Thirty-One handbags at the salon during the event as well as every first and third Friday.

"It's been a very successful, positive move," said owner and Signal Mountain resident Janet Smith, whose salon was previously located at 1830 Taft Hwy., between Ayala's Mexican Restaurant and the Secret Garden. "We have had a lot more walk-in traffic."

During the Sunday on Signal event, Smith said salon customers will have the opportunity to draw from a fish bowl of discounts ranging from $2 to $50 off products and styling tools, as well as deals on services including highlights and color.

In her new space Smith will be offering new services including extensions and permanent straightening treatments, which she said are similar to keratin hair-straightening treatments but use a formaldehyde-free formula.

She said she also plans to add a makeup artist and a nail technician, as manicures are a service not currently available on the mountain.

Since about one-half of her customers come from off the mountain, she said she tries to encourage them to patronize other local businesses when they make the trek. Customers who ask about the flowers from Poppy decorating the salon, the portraits of Smith's daughter Ellie made by Greg Forehand wearing clothes from the Treehouse, or the hairbrushes displayed in containers from Cutting Corners Framing and Gifts are directed to the corresponding neighboring business.

She also likes to support Signal moms with home-based businesses, such as Ashley McGann, who will sell her products out of the salon the first and third Friday of every month as well as during the Sunday on Signal event.

McGann offers handbags, purses and wallets from Thirty-One and high-fashion jewelry from Premier. She said she has been selling Thirty-One products since August and feels they are ideal for busy moms and the clientele at J. Smith.

"For any mom with kids with lots of activities, there's so many things you're always carrying around with you," said McGann, who keeps herself organized using the multitude of exterior pockets on her Thirty-One handbag. "They're fun and cute, and monogramming is really big right now, which can be done on a lot of them."

McGann facilitates parties for people in the community who want to host friends at their home and receive discounts based on retail sales at the party. Sunday on Signal event attendees who sign up to host will receive $25 in extra credit toward product purchases, she said.
