A 42-year-old man was shot in the ankle and foot as he was running toward his house to take cover after occupants in a car opened fire this morning, according to Chattanooga Police Department.
Police responded to the shooting after Gus McKinney showed up at a local emergency room with injuries. He told investigators he was walking a friend home at about 3 a.m. near 909 W. 39th St. when the vehicle pulled up and people inside opened fire.
While McKinney was the victim in this case, he has a violent history. Local records show assault charges dating back to the early 1990s. He pleaded guilty to a first-degree murder charge in 1993 and was sentenced to four years, according to local court records.
Earlier this year, he faced charges of reckless endangerment, vandalism and domestic assault. All the charges with the exception of reckless endangerment were dropped. He received a suspended sentence of three years, according to records.
The shooting remains under investigation.
There have been two shootings within the last 24 hours, bringing the city's total shooting incidents resulting in injury or death to 83, according to newspaper records.
