A 4-year-old boy was bitten around the neck this evening by a neighbor's pit bull while playing in his yard in the Silverdale area, Chattanooga police said.

The attack happened around 5:20 p.m. as the boy and his father were in front of their residence at 7354 Old Cleveland Pike. The dog reportedly broke loose from its owner's backyard, ran up the street and attacked the child, police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary said.

The boy's father, Chris Binshaw pulled a knife and stabbed the dog to get it off his son. The dog's owner, Eric Robinson, then grabbed the dog and put it back in its cage.

The child suffered non-life threatening injuries but his current condition is unknown. Charges are pending further investigation, Weary said.
