Volkswagen of America reported today that August sales rose 10.4 percent over a year ago led by the compact Jetta.

Year to date, the German automaker with a production plant in Chattanooga has posted a 20.7 increase.

Jetta sedan sales last month were 55.5 percent higher over August 2010, the company said.

"August saw its share of challenges, with consumer confidence sliding and a substantial hurricane on the last weekend of the month, to name just two," said Jonathan Browning, chief executive of VW of America, in a statement. "Nonetheless, Volkswagen continued to show strength in its base demand, with the seventh straight month of double-digit growth, and continued strong performance across the lineup."

The Chattanooga plant has begun shipping new Passats to dealers with the car's market launch slated for the end of this month.
