Rhea County fair canceled for rain

The predicted dousing from Tropical Storm Lee forced Rhea County officials to cancel Labor Day activities today.

Rhea County Fair Association President Harold Fisher said Sunday night that the weather forecast persuaded officials to postpone "Old Timers Day" festivities.

The scheduled activities included a chili cook-off, the Age of Elegance pageant, and performers such as Mike Snider, a Grand Ole Opry member and former "Hee-Haw" television show regular.

Fisher said fair officials are working to reschedule all the activities for the end of October, depending on Snider's availability.

This year's theme, "County Pride, Countywide," has drawn families from the county and region since it began Thursday, Fisher said.
