Woman sues Soddy-Daisy cemetery after falling into open grave

A Knoxville woman is suing a Soddy-Daisy cemetery for $75,000, claiming she suffered multiple injuries after falling into an open grave during a funeral last year.

In a complaint filed Sept. 23, Marcia Brackfield said she was attending a funeral at Millsaps Cemetery in Soddy-Daisy last September when she stepped on what she thought was grass - but was actually green plastic covering an open grave.

"The plaintiff plummeted into the grave and suffered multiple severe and permanent injuries," the complaint states.

Because of the fall, Brackfield said she has been forced to seek medical treatment, suffered mental and emotional anguish and lost ability to earn wages.

She alleges Millsaps Cemetery and Lane Funeral Home are responsible for her injuries because they failed to "inspect and discover the dangerous condition in the customer path."
