A man wanted in connection with the assault of a DeKalb County deputy during a traffic stop Saturday was found with drugs in his home when a warrant was served Monday, authorities said.

Joseph Xavier Register, 42, of Fort Payne, was charged with attempted battery with evidence, third-degree theft of property, unlawful possession of paraphernalia and marijuana, unlawful possession of controlled substance and unlawful manufacturing, according to a news release from Sheriff Jimmy Harris. He is currently in jail.

Patrick W. Gourdine, 26, of Flat Rock, was arrested on a charge of attempted battery with evidence and was released Tuesday on a $3,000 bond, Harris said.

Warrants were issued for Elisha Edward Goins, age and address unknown, on attempted battery with evidence and for Joseph Michael Jenkins, 31, of Higdon, on charges of second-degree assault, resisting arrest and criminal mischief, according to the release. They remain at large.

On Saturday, during a traffic stop on County Road 814, a scuffle broke out between one of the men and the deputy, Harris said. During the altercation, a camera fell off the deputy's uniform and one of the men picked it up and put it in Register's vehicle, the sheriff said.

When authorities arrived at Register's home Monday to serve the warrants, he admitted there was a meth lab in the house, and deputies found meth, the meth lab, marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Harris said.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Jenkins and Goins are asked to contact the sheriff's office at 256-845-3801.
