Because singer Lauren Alaina was in Louisville, Ky., opening for country superstars Sugarland on Saturday night, she missed her prom at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School.

But that didn't stop the "American Idol" runner-up from throwing her own prom onstage, then crashing a prom at an undisclosed high school in Kentucky.

The Rossville teen surprised her Louisville audience by stepping onstage with a short, new bob that's angled in layers to her shoulders. After telling her audience she was missing her prom at home, she invited them to get up and dance with the person next to them while she threw her own prom.

For her date, Lauren singled out a teen in the audience and invited him onstage to dance with her. The pair slow-danced while she and a band member sang a cover of Lady Antebellum's current hit, "Dancing Away with My Heart."

"He's cute, isn't he?" she asked the audience.

Later Saturday night, the teen singer tweeted, "I crashed a prom tonight after my set. So glad I still got to go to prom."

On Sunday, tweets from Brian Chism and Ian Herrington confirmed the story.

"I am so glad that I got to be your prom date tonight! You have made my senior year! What a great night!" said Chism.

"I'm so glad I got to meet and dance with you at prom," wrote Herrington.

Attempts to learn from her Nashville label which Kentucky high school's prom she visited were unanswered.

The Rossville teen was recently announced as the 2012 Special Olympics Project UNIFY ambassador for North America. On her website, Lauren said she has been involved with Special Olympics locally since she was in sixth grade. She also volunteered as an aide with special-education students while attending LFO
