The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into an officer-involved shooting this afternoon in Catoosa County.

A man - who police are working to identify - was seen leaving a home in the Meadows subdivision off Ooltewah-Ringgold Road at 4 p.m. carrying two black duffle bags, Catoosa County Sheriff Phil Summers said.

Several deputies found the man in the woods and attempted to talk him into surrendering, Summers said. But the man refused to drop the shotgun he was carrying, the sheriff said.

After several minutes, the man pointed the gun at a deputy and a detective fired one shot, killing the man, Summers said.

The man didn't have any identification on his person, but was described as white with brown hair and in his early 20s.

The detective who fired the shot hasn't been identified pending the investigation, Summers said.
