Richard HolcombS. Richard Holcomb, a retired Hamilton County general sessions court judge and a onetime member of the Tennessee Legislature, died Sunday. He was 76.
He had been first elected a General Sessions judge in 1982 and served for 24 years until his retirement. In his first term, Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Bob Cooper named Judge Holcomb to the Court of the Judiciary where he had eight years of service.
He also had been selected by Tennessee Govs. Ned McWherter and Phil Bredesen to serve on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Authority.
Holcomb entered public service in 1966 with his election to the Tennessee Legislature, where he served three terms, including being chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
He was born in Chattanooga on Oct. 30, 1935, to the late Starlan R. Holcomb and Irene Lingerfelt Holcomb.
He was a 1953 graduate of Chattanooga High School and a graduate of the University of Chattanooga, where he was senior class president. He attended the University of Cincinnati and in 1962 graduated with Order of the Coif honors.
Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel on East Brainerd Road with the Honorable Clarence Shattuck presiding. Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.
