NASHVILLE - The House Democratic sponsor of controversial guns-in-parking lots legislation said this morning he intends to bring the measures up later today in the Calendar and Rules Committee.

Rep. Eddie Bass, D-Prospect, said he doesn't know if he has the votes to move the National Rifle Association-drafted bills through the Republican-controlled panel, but he intends to try.

"I'm just going to put it out there and see where it goes," he said.

In a closed-door caucus meeting Monday night, House Republicans agreed to oppose the legislation, which has pitted gun-rights advocates against business groups and colleges.

One bill strips businesses, colleges and K-12 schools of their ability to ban guns stored by employees, students or visitors in their locked vehicles parked on their lots. The other bill prevents employers from discriminating against gun owners.
