NASHVILLE - The state Senate voted unanimously today to give sales-tax relief to victims of recent storms and tornadoes in Hamilton, Bradley, McMinn, Polk and other counties.

Sen. Mike Bell, R-Riceville, sponsored the measure, which authorizes sales-tax refunds on purchases made by those receiving insurance settlements or filing claims on damage from weather-related damage.

Preliminary assessments show the March 2 twister in Hamilton County destroyed 82 homes worth a total of $10.6 million.

The House companion bill, sponsored by Rep. Eric Watson, R-Cleveland, was scheduled for a floor vote today as well.
