A 35-year-old man was struck by a southbound Norfolk Southern train in Dayton, Tenn., overnight on the tracks between the crossings at Iowa and Illinois avenues, according to the Dayton Police Department.

The victim, identified by police as Adam Wes Moreland, was found lying on the east side of the tracks behind the B&E Convenience Store, police said.

"He was the one that called 911," Lt. Jeff Hill said this morning. Hill said one of Moreland's legs was amputated in the accident and the other was seriously damaged.

Moreland didn't live far from the scene, Hill said.

Moreland told police that "the last thing he remembers was that he couldn't sleep and he had went walking."

Moreland "thinks he may have had a seizure because he couldn't remember anything past that," a news release states. Moreland's wife told police that he had a history of seizures.

Authorities said the accident happened just before 2:13 a.m., and Moreland was flown by LifeForce air ambulance to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga for treatment.
