GADSDEN, Ala. - Authorities say a Georgia man has drowned at Little River Canyon National Preserve in DeKalb County in Alabama.

The Gadsden Times reports that 64-year-old William Ragland was swimming in a popular area named High Rock, a 10- to 15-foot cliff.

Park Ranger John Newman says other park rangers responded to a call about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Newman says a woman was in the water and attempted to find Ragland, who had jumped in and didn't resurface.

Newman says the park's fire technician jumped in the water and was able to bring the woman to shore. After the chief ranger took a dive, and was unable to find Ragland.

Newman says the Fischer Rescue Squad's dive team recovered Ragland's body in 12-feet of water after about a seven-minute search.
