Chemical spill closes I-85 northbound ramp in Atlanta

ATLANTA - Police say a chemical spill caused the exit ramp heading northbound from Interstate-85 to Jimmy Carter Boulevard to shut down.

Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge says the incident occurred Thursday and involved a tanker truck, leaking industrial soap. The leak had been stopped, and firefighters were waiting for a crew from a commercial cleanup company to arrive.

Police Cpl. Jake Smith tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/SVT6db) police, fire and hazmat units were on the scene at 12:30 p.m. to assess the situation. Smith did not know when the ramp would reopen.

Rutledge says that two civilians and a police officer were exposed to the chemical, but were evaluated at the scene and did not require transport to a hospital.
