Hamilton County commissioners tighten employee leave benefit

The Hamilton County Commission today approved an employee handbook that will have tighter guidelines for accruing leave.

The changes were made to tighten up on employees who build up massive amounts of leave that they are paid for when they retire. County Mayor Jim Coppinger said the new plan will save money.

Employees in general government earn 19 to 29 days' leave a year and under the former policy they could carry over all of it from year to year.

Under the new policy, they can carry over only 10 days per year. The rest will be "use or lose."
