A top Volkswagen official told an industry publication the automaker expects to pick a site for an Audi plant in North America by the summer.

Michael Macht, Volkswagen AG's head of manufacturing, told Automotive News Europe that sites in the United States and Mexico are still in the running.

While VW has yet to determine which Audi model it will assemble there, he added the plant decision is closely linked with the company's desire to bring another Volkswagen sport utility vehicle, larger than the Tiguan, to the United States.

"The two decisions are closely related, and we expect to make them by the summer," Macht told the publication.

While Mexico has advantages, he said that "Made in USA" is an important statement and that there's still capacity at VW's Chattanooga location.
