Police working two burglaries

Signal Mountain Police Detective Jim Kizzio is working to solve what appear to be two related attempted burglaries that occurred Saturday, Feb. 18.

"I'm not clear on the details on one, but we did have an incident where somebody went into a house where one of the family members was home and happened to cross them. [The other incident] basically sounds like the same kind of situation - she [the perpetrator] came in the house, they [family member] walked in and she said something about a cleaning lady," Chief Boyd Veal reported.

Veal said he doesn't have an exact description of the suspect yet, but Doug Fisher, whose Ohio Avenue home was one of the ones entered, said the woman was black and driving a mid-sized red to maroon car based on a description by his daughter, who was at home when the woman entered through the front door around 1:20 p.m. and confronted her.

"She knew what our name was and apparently a few details about myself. That bothered us a little bit," Fisher said. "As far as we know she didn't get anything. She told my daughter she was supposed to pick somebody up who was cleaning our house; we don't have a cleaning lady."

Veal said the other incident, which involved a house in the Birnam Wood area, occurred in the early to mid-afternoon.

"There was no force or anything like that, they just found [her] in the residence," he said. "It does appear some property was taken."

Fisher noted that police reportedly have information about a woman living in an older maroon Nissan who "was going around to some churches and such asking for money - I'm sure it's maybe just a homeless person or something like that, and she felt like this was a good place to come take care of herself."

"We can't say that's the same person, but that was a logical kind of suspicion on the front end," said Veal.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Signal Mountain Police at 886-2124. Further details will be posted on the Signal Mountain Community News Facebook page as soon as available.
