A young man was shot and killed when two homes on North Orchard Knob and Rawlings streets were sprayed with bullets tonight around 7:30, Chattanooga police said.

At around the same time, a 14-year-old boy was shot in the leg by someone who got out of a car and began firing at a group of teens on foot near Kirby and E. 13th St.

In the first instance, police spokeswoman Jerri Weary said officers working in East Chattanooga responded to a shots fired call and found houses at 1901 Rawlings and 862 N. Orchard Knob riddled with bullets.

The officers found the body of a young black male in the yard of the Orchard Knob home. He had been shot in the face, Weary said.

"Two people have been detained in this shooting but it is unknown what role they play in the incident. No arrests have been made and a motive in the shooting is unknown," Weary said in a news release.

At close to the same time, the 14-year-old boy said he and some friends were walking near Kirby and E. 13th streets when a white sedan pulled up. The boy told police someone from the car yelled out to ask who he was, then a person got out of the car, ran around a house and began firing at the teens.

The boy was hit in the upper thigh but his injuries aren't believed life-threatening, Weary said.

No arrests have been made tonight, she said.
