Jason Fitzgerald has been hired as Hixson High School's football coach.
"Jason's a proven leader and will bring excitement to the program," Hixson athletic director Brian Bray said. "He fits what we were looking for. He's a proven commodity. We looked at what he has done in the Chattanooga area."
Fitzgerald had spent his entire career at Rhea County, as both an assistant and head coach. He resigned from the head coaching position in the spring of 2010 after the death of his son Jackson but remained in the school system as a teacher. In his time at Rhea, the Golden Eagles won four region championships and reached the state playoff quarterfinals three times.
"With everything that went on in my life with Jackson passing, it was time to take a break. I started looking again this year and Hixson came open," he said. "We had played Hixson before. I knew they had good facilities and they have had good players previously."
Fitzgerald will be at Hixson all day Thursday and plans to meet with parents and the booster club Thursday night.
