Walker County Public Transit offering free rides to voters

The Walker County Public Transit is providing free rides to community voters for the first time ever beginning July 9.

"We have had quite a few riders ask about providing this service in the past, but had not had the manpower or vehicles to make it happen," Walker County Transit Supervisor Wendy Pritchard said. "It's really important that everyone can get transportation to vote. We have clients who do not have friends or family to provide transportation for them and depend solely on transit to get back and forth."

The service is open to anyone and everyone residing in Walker County who wants to get out and cast their ballot. County employees are volunteering their time to help out and transport clients.

Transit clients will be picked up from their home, taken to the voting precinct, waited on and taken back home all at no cost.

"This is the first time we've been able to provide this, so we hope the clients will be flexible while we work out the bugs," said Pritchard. "We're confident that we will provide a great service and hope it will be well-used and appreciated."

Walker Transit's schedule for providing the free rides to voters will follow regular voting hours: Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
