Chattanooga: Water could go out in Belvoir, North Moore areas

photo A major water line break has buckled Brainerd Road at Belvoir Avenue. Police are diverting traffic around the area and Chattanooga Assistant Public Works Director Lee Norris said "it looks like it's going to be awhile before they get it fixed." He said Tennessee American Water Co. officials are on the scene.

People in the Belvoir and North Moore Road areas could lose water service as Tennessee American crews begin work to repair a broken main on Brainerd Road, water company spokesman Kino Becton said.

The 8-inch main broke today, buckling the street at the Belvoir Road intersection and sending sheets of water across the road.

Chattanooga police have set up barriers and are diverting eastbound traffic onto Belvoir around the break.

Becton said the recent heavy rains after the long dry spell caused the ground to shift and the line to break. He said crews are turning off valves to stop the flow so they can begin repairs. He couldn't say this afternoon how long that will take.

Another main broke in the Silverdale area for the same reason, Becton said, and crews are working on that repair as well.
