Hamilton County Sheriff's Office corrections Officer Dale Daniel was indicted today on nine counts of misdemeanor theft, accused of accepting donated leave time and cash while allegedly feigning a life-threatening illness.

Daniel turned himself in to the sheriff's office today and was taken to Hamilton County Jail for processing, Atkinson said.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Janice Atkinson said the criminal investigation division began looking into Daniel in June.

"This investigation stems from statements and comments made by the defendant to co-workers in regards to him having a life-threatening illness," Atkinson's statement said.

The investigation found Daniel received donated leave time and a total of $2,154.09 "to help with his purported added expenses," Atkinson said.

On Monday, the case was presented to the Hamilton County grand jury, which returned the indictment today.
