In keeping with the Downtown Public Library's adult late-night theme summer reading program "Between the Covers," the branch is hosting an event solely dedicated to midnight snacks.
Although the July 28 event will be at 2:30 p.m., it is designed to help readers make or purchase the perfect midnight snack for when they get hungry between the covers of their favorite summer read. The event will feature a presentation by Hot Chocolatier Owner Wendy Buckner and a cookbook swap in honor of National Cookbook Month.

An upcoming event called Midnight Snacks will feature a presentation by Hot Chocolatier owner Wendy Buckner and a cookbook swap."There will be free samples, chocolate for purchase and lots and lots of cookbooks," said Library Assistant II Diane Moore. "Any question about chocolate or pastries you have [Buckner] will be able to answer and you may discover some new cookbooks or ways of cooking."
In conjunction with the event, Moore has already organized a special cookbook display and she said the library will provide a table with some of its most popular cookbooks for participants in the event to peruse.
"If you don't find a cookbook in the swap, the library has plenty to choose from," said Moore. "We've got cookbooks on cooking baby food, cooking green, barbecue, a beer can cookbook, vegan and vegetarian options and just about any kind of ethnicity you can think of."
If the library does not have a specific cookbook someone is looking for, the library will order it as part of a new customer service initiative according to Andria Davis, public relations coordinator for the Public Library.
"If you see a title on Amazon or in the New York Times and we don't have it, we'll order it immediately," she said. "We will make sure the book comes in and is on hold in your name at whichever branch is most convenient for you so you'll be the first person to have it."
She said another part of the new initiative stipulates that if four or more people are on hold for a specific title, the library will order another copy to make sure people get the titles they request in a timely manner.
"We're here to serve the community and it's important for us to know what our customers want and help them make better faster selections," she said. "We want our shelves full of books that circulate, not collect dust."
