Volkswagen Group of America today reported that sales surged 28.4 percent in May over a year ago, as the Chattanooga-made Passat topped the 10,000 mark for the third consecutive month.
VW sold 10,178 Passats in May, the company reported in a press release.
Overall, VW sold 38,657 units in the month, its best May since 1973, the automaker said.
"Selling over 38,000 vehicles this month is a significant accomplishment for Volkswagen," said Jonathan Browning, chief executive for VW Group of America, in a statement.
VW reported that sales of its clean diesel TDI models accounted for 20.3 percent of sales in May, up 21 percent versus the prior year.
