Delta Air Lines will return mainline service between Chattanooga and Atlanta later this year, but it's not certain it will stay.

Delta mainline service was replaced with Delta Connection carriers such as Atlantic Southeast Airlines in 1995.

"We are excited about the larger aircraft Delta is giving Chattanooga for the 6:45 a.m. departure flight during the fall schedule," said Terry Hart, interim president and CEO of the Chattanooga Airport, in a statement.

The new flight will feature a DC-9 and hold 125 passengers, according to the airport.

Airport spokeswoman Christina Siebold said the flight is starting during the airport's busiest time and Delta hasn't indicated if will last after the start of the year.

Delta has from 10 to 11 flights daily between Chattanooga and Atlanta.
